Debbie Scattergood Chastain was born and brought up in Vero Beach. She left the area to go to Chatham Hall in Chatham, VA. Following graduation, she attended Converse College and earned her BA in Elementary Education from Clemson University where she pursued a master’s degree in Guidance prior to attending Smith College and earning her second master’s in Education of the Deaf.
Debbie returned to Vero Beach and instituted a four county program for preschool hearing impaired children before moving to NYC to work for Chemical Bank for nine years. She enjoyed her banking career until returning to Vero Beach in 1988 to marry Dan, her late husband. She substitute taught until the birth of their daughter.
Having been brought up in a real estate family, it was natural for her to begin her real estate career. Following several years in the industry, she worked in the title insurance business until branching out to the senior industry where she spent the next 20 years, the last nine of which being top in sales for Acts Indian River Estates. In 2021 she longed to return to real estate and loves working with and being part of the Rita Curry Team of Dale Sorensen Real Estate.
From early on, Debbie has been active in her church and choir. Giving back to her community has been important to her. Debbie was an active volunteer in NYC and continued her involvement upon returning to Vero Beach where she was instrumental in starting the Junior League of Indian River. Over the years, Debbie has been active with the American Cancer Society, has performed with and served on the board of the Vero Beach Theatre Guild and is most active with Big Brothers Big Sisters for which she has worked on the local advisory council since 2011. She enjoys spending time and mentoring her “Little Sister” through the organization.
In Debbie’s leisure time, she loves traveling, kayaking, singing at her piano, attempting golf, exercising and most importantly spending time with her daughter and cuddling her cats.
Debbie was diagnosed with breast cancer in March, 2017 and understands the importance of supporting and encouraging others who are encountering the disease. She is grateful to her family for their support and wants to be there for others on their journey. Debbie is happy to be a part of The Cancer Dancers that provide a wonderful outlet to her and many others on their challenging journey.
